Dear SBIR Insider,
Good news. SBIR, STTR and CPP are now extended through November 18, 2011. Coincidentally, so is the rest of the government.
Kidding aside, the House has just overwhelmingly (352 / 66) passed H.R. 2608 to extend agency appropriations through November 18, 2011. The bill has now been sent to the President and will be signed later today.
Our agencies will return to business as usual, or what has unfortunately become usual, operating a country and it's programs on a series of short term resolutions.
Now the work on SBIR reauthorization continues. We'll have full coverage in the next issue, and it's not pretty.
National SBIR Fall 2011 Conference, Nov 6-9, 2011 * New Orleans, LA
With the passage of H.R. 2608, we now know the federal SBIR Program Managers and much of their support staff will be attending the National SBIR Conference in New Orleans, November 6-9, 2011. This will be a good opportunity for you to meet them and participate in one-on-one sessions with them.
The conference host committee, under the leadership of Roy Keller (a long time SBIR champion), have been formulating their agenda for this conference by studying previous conferences, listening to the comments of SBIR leaders, as well as attendees from past conferences.
In addition to the valuable presentations, networking, and training sessions, Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA), Chair of the Senate Committee on Small Business & Entrepreneurship, will be speaking. Unlike some high ranking political speakers, Senator Landrieu knows SBIR and has been fighting in the trenches like a Navy Seal, for SBIR and small business. I'm sure she'd like your feedback and support as well.
Complete information about the conference is available on their web site at www.sbirla.org I hope to see you there.
Closing Thoughts
Now that we have a running government through November 18, the House will try to pass it's SBIR reauthorization bill H.R. 1425. This bill is so flawed that much of the SBIR community is happier with CR's keeping the program running "as is". We'll have complete coverage for you as it comes into focus.
Thanks to the many of you who offered comments and words of support. I've come to feel toward you like extended "family" and your comments as well as criticisms are important and appreciated.
In our next issue, I'll address some of your questions and comments. So let me hear from you! Just reply to this email and I should receive it.
Remember we have the Dept of Transportation (DOT) opening their FY-2012 SBIR next week, and the big DoD FY-2012.1 on November 9.
Sincerely,
Rick
